Job Story
The Industrial Systems student assistant will support advance NIAR’s industry system visualization. They will contribute to the development of an advanced industrial data visualization workflow for NIAR facilities which houses an increasing range of advanced manufacturing equipment. This role focuses on creating a scalable, secure, and efficient data pipeline integrated with a SCADA system to enable real-time monitoring, alarm management, and remote accessibility for clients and stakeholders. The successful candidate will play a key role in bridging industrial device data with visualization platforms, ensuring seamless data flow and supporting NIAR’s Industry 4.0 initiatives.
Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.
Job Duties
Assist in developing an industrial data pipeline, centered around a SCADA system
Configure each part of the dataflow, from collecting initial industrial device data to delivering data to client devices for visualization
Provide guidance on optimizing data transformation processes to ensure scalability, minimize latency, and uphold data security standards
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Additional Requirements
Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
Self-motivated with ability to learn new technologies quickly with minimal supervision.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to work with and understand complex systems.
General knowledge of Industry 4.0 Technologies and Applications.
Experience with manufacturing machinery such as PLCs and robotics.
Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in SCADA systems such as Ignition.
Working knowledge of general-purpose programming languages such as Python.
Experience building data pipelines that integrate diverse data types and sources.
Knowledge of different communication protocols (OPC UA, TCP, HTTPS, MQTT).
Experience with SQL or other database management systems.
Experience in data visualization.
General understanding of cybersecurity practices, especially in an industrial environment
Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators.
Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
