Job Story
The Custodial Supervisor position ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the department, the University, and established custodial guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to account for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special custodial projects. Performs daily custodial duties as needed in support of the departmental mission. This position also comes with a robust benefits package (effective on your first day) and generous paid time off.
Job Summary
Plans and directs the work of custodial staff to ensure that established standards are met on a daily basis. Establishes work schedules, routine procedures, and training requirements for staff. Performs specialized custodial services, such as maintenance and repair of custodial equipment, floor cleaning and finishing equipment, carpet and upholstery maintenance equipment in university buildings as needed in absence of custodial staff. Responsible for ordering needed supplies and equipment for specific buildings and/or zones.
Essential Functions
Ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the department, the University, and established custodial guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to account for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special custodial projects. Performs daily and specialized custodial duties as needed in support of the departmental mission. Provides continuity of custodial services under emergency conditions or unique circumstances by performing custodial duties directly related to the emergency conditions or as the situation dictates. Inspects completed work; directs any rework or modification. Conducts periodic inspections of University buildings and facilities to determine custodial needs. Supervises various staff actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks and entryways as required.
Required Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two (2) years of experience in custodial work, with one (1) year of related experience in a supervisory or lead role
Required License/Certifications/Training:
Valid Kansas drivers license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the materials, methods and practices used in housekeeping operations and operation, use care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, floor machines and other janitorial equipment; and the use of safe principles and safe techniques for Supervision.
- Must be familiar with the principles of inventory control: sanitation and all practices and procedures.
- Ability to work and supervise effectively with fellow workers and others
- Ability to keep and maintain records and prepare reports, assign and supervise the work of subordinates and train and instruct employees.
- Maintain and organize filing and record keeping systems, confidential information.
- Supervise multiple custodial work units and various projects, work orders, and personnel.

This is a 2nd shift position and has a $.60 per hour shift differential
Physical Requirements:
Ability to position self to clean designated areas, equipment and items. This includes but is not limited to the ability to clean in confined, elevated, and loud noise spaces. Ability to use tools, equipment, and technology necessary to do the job. This includes dexterity in instrument manipulation. Ability to move, transport, and/or deliver items, supplies, or equipment. Ability to inspect work, materials, equipment, and/or supplies and identify any errors, needs, and/or determining factors. Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to drive state vehicle. Ability to remove snow and ice from designated areas. Ability to ascend and descend ladders and/or stairs.
Additional Physical Requirement:
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force to constantly move objects.
