Job Story
The Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wichita State University is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in Latinx Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in August 2025. The successful candidate will have demonstrated teaching excellence, desire to teach a variety of course levels, and interest in expanding the Latinx offerings on campus. As we are an emerging Hispanic Serving Student Institution, the candidate should have a desire to work with this population and the local Latino community, promoting student and community engagement. This position could be based in the Department of English, the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures (Spanish), or in the Department of Philosophy.
Job Summary
Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Meet expectations for research, teaching, and service as set forth by the department and college.
Job Duties
The position involves engaging in scholarly activity; teaching three courses a semester in the undergraduate level (graduate courses are a possibility as well); advising students; serving the department(s) where the candidate will be housed, the university, and the community.
Faculty Requirements
Ph.D. in Latino Studies or closely related Latino-related field by the time of the appointment such as Latin American Studies, English, Spanish, Philosophy, Comparative Literature or Cultural Studies with interest in Critical Theory, Subaltern Studies, Ethnic Studies, etc.
Demonstrated teaching excellence.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Native or near-native fluency in English.
- Advanced level in Spanish.
- Ability to communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to recruit and retain undergraduate students.
- Willingness to accommodate a variety of learning styles and strategies in instructional delivery and learning activities, including online and blended learning, flexible teaching methods, and applied learning approaches.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching courses of Latinx Studies or similar fields.
- Experience working with Latino population.
- Demonstrated ability to teach interdisciplinary courses incorporating Philosophy, English, or Spanish and/or cross-listed courses between their specialization area and Philosophy.
