Job Story

The position of Carpenter/Painter allows a team member to serve two roles, thus increasing their daily contributions to out maintenance needs. With an ever growing campus, and a limited number of team members, it is important to utilize every employee to their full potential. The Building Maintenance shop maintains buildings throughout the campus and all WSU buildings off campus.

Job Summary

Performs skilled carpentry and painting work in construction and/or maintenance of buildings, walls, ceilings, doors, roofs, cabinets, and wooden structures to meet building codes and national fire and safety codes.

Essential Functions

Performs skilled carpentry and painting work in the construction, renovation and repair of buildings, additions, and fixtures from blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions. Interprets blueprints, plans, sketches and diagrams to properly complete assigned projects. Operates woodworking equipment and machines to saw, plane, drill and mortise lumber for framing, doors, cabinets, shelves, molding and related items; estimates the amount of required materials and supplies needed for projects; selects type of lumber and materials needed. Inspects completed work to ensure compliance with blueprints, specifications, instructions and applicable codes and procedures; performs any rework or modifications as necessary. Plans, selects materials, lays out, and constructs; installs hardware.; alters, repairs and renovates buildings and rooms; removes partitions, studs, walls, doors and door frames; prepares surfaces to apply finishing materials. Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks and entryways as required.

Job Duties

It is critical the building maintenance shop operates at a high level in order to provide maintenance and upkeep for the life safety and security of students, faculty, staff and guests. This includes building repair, maintenance and working with the fire safety, HVAC, electrical, mechanical maintenance and plumbing shops to ensure that all systems are functioning and operating properly.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in carpentry and painting

Required License/Certifications/Training:

Valid Kansas Driver's License or Ability to Obtain One in 90 Days

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to gain knowledge of work related agency operations, safety standards and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow explicit instructions, both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow workers and others.
  • Ability to assist others as needed.
   

Physical Requirements:

Ability to position self for inspection, construction or maintenance of equipment and/or buildings including confined, elevated and loud noise spaces. Ability to use tools, equipment, and technology necessary to do the job. This includes dexterity in instrument manipulation. Ability to move, transport, and/or deliver items, supplies, or equipment. Ability to drive state vehicle. Ability to remove snow and ice from designated areas. Ability to ascend and descend ladders and/or stairs.

Additional Physical Requirement:

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force to constantly move objects.
