Job Story
As a Writing Specialist for TRIO Disability Support Services, you will provide DSS students with tutoring and assistance for English courses they may be enrolled in, as well as perform general office and receptionist tasks (greeting visitors, answering phones, etc.) for the department.

Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties
• Support the Mission, Vision, and Values of the TRIO DSS Peer Tutor Program and TRIO Disability Support Services.
• Complete BOTH TRIO DSS Student Assistant training and TRIO DSS Peer Tutor Program CRLA Training.
• Attend all monthly tutor meetings/trainings.
• Provide writing assistance to TRIO DSS participants.
• Complete all necessary paperwork related to the Writing Specialist position.
• Perform general office tasks as assigned (Word processing, filing, greeting, answering phones/directing calls, creating project newsletter, etc.)
• Help students become self-sufficient, independent learners.
• Maintain contact via face-to-face, phone, or email communication with the Tutor Coordinator and/or Admin Specialist in the event of any concerns/problems. Keep the Tutor Coordinator and Admin Specialist aware of any address, telephone, or schedule changes.
• Other duties as assigned by the TRIO Disability Support Services Professional Staff.

Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.

Additional Requirements
Writing Specialist must be currently enrolled at WSU as an undergraduate/graduate student
Must be of sophomore or higher class standing
A strong academic background in English and related subjects
Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
Must have a B or better in a English courses
Must have proficient English speaking and communication skills
Transfer students must have completed at least one full semester at WSU
Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines
Sensitivity to the diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds of students with disabilities

Required Experience
This is specific to each position and department. See additional requirements and preferences.

Preferred Qualifications
English or Communications major
Grade of A in the majority of English courses
Flexible, open schedule
Experience tutoring or working with individuals with disabilities

Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
