DUTIES: Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline. Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope. Applies diversified knowledge of engineering research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; makes recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area. Performs composite, metallic, and hybrid static standard testing, using material performance evaluation and testing methodologies to ensure compliance with industry standards and specifications. Designs mechanical test fixtures using Computer aided design CAD software - Dassault Systemes CATIA V5 and Assembly Design workbenches, applicable to both standard and non-standard test methods. Ensures accurate testing and structural integrity. Develops detailed models and assemblies to meet specific testing requirements and industry standards. Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters. Plan or conduct experimental, environmental, operational, or stress tests on models or prototypes of aircraft or aerospace systems or equipment. Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation. Analyze design or requirements information for mechanical equipment or systems. Performs Mechanical Testing Using MTS uni axial load frames for standard and non-standard testing – static and fatigue (constant amplitude and Spectrum testing). Programs, operates and maintains MTS Bi-Axial test equipment in support of complex load application to composites structures. Utilizes Acoustic Emission system to non-destructively inspect damages to composites structures undergoing testing. Analyzes data to characterize failure mechanism. Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings, using Microsoft PowerPoint presentation software. Prepares, or assists with the preparation of, materials for grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities. Write technical reports or other documentation, such as handbooks or bulletins, for use by engineering staff, management, or customers. Serves as investigator on single or multiple projects of complexity and scope consistent with above criteria, and/or manages a research unit. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. Create models of engineering designs or methods.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related STEM field. Two (2) years of experience working in a research laboratory with the following: composite, metallic, and hybrid static standard testing; material performance evaluation and testing methodologies; mechanical test fixtures; Computer aided design CAD software - Dassault Systemes CATIA V5; and Microsoft PowerPoint presentation software.
