Job Story

As the only national training site for the ATF in a public university, Wichita State University’s School of Criminal Justice is launching two new master’s programs: forensic biology and forensic firearms. Faculty and students will work closely with the ATF and other law enforcement agencies and have ample opportunity to collaborate.

To lead these new programs, the School of Criminal Justice seeks an experienced practitioner-scholar committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service. Depending on the candidate's credentials, the appointment may be tenure-track or non-tenure-track. This is a 12-month appointment with additional responsibility as the director of a newly established master’s degree in forensic biology. The director is responsible for the new program to be accredited by FEPAC.

The School of Criminal Justice offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice, a fully online bachelor’s degree in homeland security, and a bachelor’s degree in forensic science.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Essential Functions

Meet expectations for research, teaching, and service as set forth by the department and college.

Job Duties

  • Lead and direct the forensic biology program in consultation with the School of Criminal Justice and law enforcement partners.
  • Ensure program activities and outcomes align with the vision and objectives of the program.
  • Make admission decisions and coordinate with the Graduate School for student progress and graduation.
  • Develop strategic plans for the program, monitor the budget, and adjust resources as needed.
  • Prepare for and maintain FEPAC accreditation.
  • Oversee the master’s program in forensic firearms in consultation with its coordinator.
  • Teach one course per semester in the forensic biology program for a tenure-track option. Non-tenure-track faculty will have more teaching responsibilities.
  • As a tenure-track faculty, seek external funding for research projects, individually or collaboratively, with faculty or local/state agencies.
  • Mentor and advise students.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.
  • Engage with the community and contribute to public scholarship.

Faculty Requirements

  • Ph.D. in forensic biology or other related fields of forensic science.
  • Minimum two years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Advanced training in the forensic lab setting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of forensic laboratory policies and procedures
  • Advanced skills in the forensic lab setting.
  • Knowledge of the FEPAC accreditation process
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching in higher education.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds.
