Job Story
As the only national training site for the ATF in a public university, Wichita State University’s School of Criminal Justice is launching two new master’s programs: forensic biology and forensic firearms. Faculty and students will work closely with the ATF and other law enforcement agencies and have ample opportunity to collaborate.
The School of Criminal Justice seeks an experienced practitioner-scholar committed to excellence in teaching to serve as the coordinator of the forensic firearms program. Depending on the candidate's credentials, the appointment may be tenure-track or non-tenure-track. This is a 12-month appointment as faculty with additional administrative responsibility as the program coordinator.
The School of Criminal Justice offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice, a fully online bachelor’s degree in homeland security, and a bachelor’s degree in forensic science.
Job Summary
Teach courses at the graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)
Essential Functions
Meet expectations for research, teaching, and service as set forth by the department and college.
Job Duties
- Coordinate the program in consultation with the director of forensic biology, the School of Criminal Justice, and law enforcement partners.
- Make admission decisions and coordinate with the Graduate School for student progress and graduation.
- Ensure program activities and outcomes align with the vision and objectives of the program.
- Work with the forensic biology program director to monitor the budget and resources.
- Teach two to three courses per semester in the forensic firearms program.
- Mentor and advise students.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities.
- Engage with the community and contribute to public scholarship.
Faculty Requirements
- Master's degree in natural sciences or social sciences or closely related field
- Firearm and toolmark examiner experience
- Minimum two years of experience in a leadership role.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Foundational knowledge of and skills for firearm and toolmark examination
- Demonstrated knowledge of and skills for NFEA training.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching in higher education.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in natural sciences or social sciences.
- Experience with NFEA training
- Experience as a firearms and toolmark examiner
Preferred License/Certifications/Training:
NFEA training
