Job Story

The Department of English at Wichita State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English and Linguistics beginning in Fall 2025. Specialization is open.

Job Summary

In addition to maintaining an active research agenda, this person will be expected to teach a wide range of undergraduate classes, including introductory linguistics, advanced linguistics classes. They will be expected to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in linguistics, and coordinate and develop the Applied Linguistics program. The position carries a 3/3 teaching load. Especially desired are candidates with interest in or experience with online or blended instruction, experiential learning, service learning, or other innovative approaches to pedagogy.

Essential Functions

Meet expectations for research, teaching, and service as set forth by the department and college.

Job Duties

  • Maintain an active research program in linguistics that addresses concerns in core areas of linguistics, and that complements and enhances the Department’s strengths.
  • Teach a wide range of introductory and advanced Linguistics courses.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the Applied Linguistics program.
  • Successfully apply for grant funding to support their research.
  • Assist in coordinating and developing the Applied Linguistics program.
  • Initiate new collaborations and expand existing ones with other research groups on campus and in the broader Wichita area.
  • Service to the English Department, the Fairmont College of Arts and Sciences, and Wichita State University.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral Degree (Foreign equivalent or higher degree) in Linguistics or a related field in hand by the start of the appointment
  • A record of scholarly publication in the field of linguistics or demonstrated potential for an active record of scholarly publication in the field of linguistics
  • A record of successful teaching at the college level

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Primary knowledge in the core areas of the field of Linguistics
  • Ability to maintain an active engagement with publishing and other creative and scholarly practices
  • Ability to be an effective teacher at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Ability to teach classes as needs arise, including first-year seminars
  • Ability to contribute service to the Applied Linguistics Program, the department, Fairmount College, and the University
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations
