Job Story
Looking to gain hands-on experience with advanced computing, research technologies, and data systems while building skills that are highly valued in today's technology workforce?

We are seeking Shockers who are interested in developing technical, analytical, and professional skills through a paid applied learning student position. This opportunity provides real-world experience supporting Wichita State University's advanced computing and research infrastructure, including high-performance computing (HPC) and research cyberinfrastructure services used by students, faculty, and researchers across a variety of disciplines.

Students will gain experience working in Linux-based environments, assisting users, solving technical challenges, creating documentation, and supporting research-focused technology services. Through this applied learning experience, students will strengthen their problem-solving abilities, technical communication skills, and understanding of professional IT support practices while contributing to the university's research and innovation mission. Supervision and mentorship will ensure meaningful experiences that align with academic preparation and career goals.

Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties
Applied Learning position provides practice in developing technical and professional competencies through:

• supporting users of research computing and data systems
• troubleshooting account access, software environment, and system usage issues
• applying analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve technical concerns
• working in Linux-based and scientific computing environments
• creating, updating, and maintaining user documentation and knowledge resources
• developing technical communication skills through interactions with students, faculty, and researchers
• monitoring system status and escalating issues through established support procedures
• gaining experience with research software ecosystems and computing workflows
• maintaining accurate records of support requests, activities, and resolutions
• collaborating with professional staff on projects that support research and instructional computing services

Assistance may include responding to service requests, onboarding new users, developing training materials, documenting procedures, participating in technology-related projects, supporting workshops or outreach activities, and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.

Required Experience
This is specific to each position and department. See additional requirements and/or preferences.

Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
