Job Story
The writing specialist provides high‑quality academic support to undergraduate participants in the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services – STEM Program. Tutors assist students in strengthening their understanding of course content, developing effective learning strategies, and building confidence in their academic abilities.
Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.
Job Duties
Provide tutoring in writing for all disciplines, including essays, lab reports, research papers, and personal statements.
Assist with brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, grammar, structure, clarity, and APA/MLA formatting.
Support discipline‑specific writing needs for STEM students.
Required Education
High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.
Required Experience
This is specific to each position and department. See additional requirements and preferences.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior tutoring, teaching, mentoring, or peer‑education experience.
Experience supporting first‑generation, low‑income, or students with disabilities.
Experience with academic writing across disciplines.
Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
