Wichita State University - Research Engineers – Job ID #62372 in Wichita, Kansas
DUTIES: Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline. Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or series of projects of lesser scope. Essential Function 1 Applies diversified knowledge of engineering research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; makes recommendations and conclusions which serve as the basis for decision making in a specialty area. Receives administrative supervision, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. Responsibility 1 Evaluate the statistical methods and procedures used to obtain data to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy. Use CMH17 Stat and MMPDS Midas standards to analyze test data and produce statistical estimates and design values. Responsibility 2 Analyze and interpret statistical data to identify significant differences in relationships among sources of information. Take data from these types of tests and be able to spot outliers using statistical measurement tools, understand statistical principals such as mean, standard deviation, coefficient of variance, max, min, ADK (Anderson-Darling), allowables generation (Screening, A-Basis, B-basis), and ANOVA. Responsibility 3 Identify relationships and trends in data, as well as any factors that could affect the results of research. Essential Function 2 Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters. Responsibility 1 Develop and test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods. Responsibility 2 Determine whether statistical methods are appropriate, based on user needs or research questions of interest. Design research projects that apply valid scientific techniques, and use information obtained from baselines or historical data to structure uncompromised and efficient analyses. Responsibility 3 Develop software applications or programming for statistical modeling and graphic analysis. Use computer software simulations to perform data analysis and statistical analysis. Code statistical software to analyze composite materials test data. Essential Function 3 Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation. Responsibility 1 Provide instructions for workers collecting and tabulating data. Responsibility 2 Evaluate sources of information to determine any limitations, in terms of reliability or usability. Responsibility 3 Perform composite materials testing for the aviation industry. Develop and test experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods. Responsibility 4 Plan data collection methods for specific projects, and determine the types and sizes of sample groups to be used. Responsibility 5 Prepare data for processing by organizing information, checking for inaccuracies, and adjusting and weighting the raw data. Responsibility 6 Apply sampling techniques, or use complete enumeration bases to determine and define groups to be surveyed. Essential Function 4 Prepares analyses, reports, and other documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international meetings. Prepares, or assists with the preparation of, materials for grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities. Responsibility 1 Report results of statistical analyses in peer-reviewed papers and technical manuals. Responsibility 2 Present statistical and nonstatistical results, using charts, bullets, and graphs, in meetings or conferences to audiences such as clients, peers, and students. Report results of statistical analyses, including information in the form of graphs, charts, and tables. Train users in CMH17 Stat. Prepare technical presentations and attend meetings for CMH17 organization. Responsibility 3 Process large amounts of data for statistical modeling and graphic analysis, using computers. Essential Function 5 Serves as investigator on single or multiple projects of complexity and scope consistent with above criteria, and/or manages a research unit. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. Responsibility 1 Use Statistical methods to analyze mechanical test data, as well as solve specific problems in many fields, such as economics, biology. Conduct advanced statistical simulations for composite materials. Responsibility 2 Examine theories, such as those of probability and inference, to discover mathematical bases for new or improved methods of obtaining and evaluating numerical data.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Applied Mathematics or a related STEM field. Two (2) years of experience with data analysis and/or statistics, including computer software simulations. 6 months experience using statistics to analyze mechanical test data. 6 months experience using CMH17 Stat and MMPDS Midas standards to analyze test data and produce statistical estimates and design values. Demonstrated knowledge of composite materials testing for the aviation industry.
