DUTIES: Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments in a field or specialization of an engineering discipline. Formulates and conducts research on problems of considerable scope and complexity. Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or a series of projects of lesser scope. Essential Function 1: Applies diversified knowledge of engineering research principles, practices, and protocols in research projects; makes recommendations and conclusions that serve as the basis for decision-making in a specialty area. Receives administrative supervision, with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits. Responsibility 1: Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports. Responsibility 2: Research, design, evaluate products, equipment, systems, or processes to meet requirements. Responsibility 3: Investigate equipment failures or difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and recommend remedial actions. Ensures that Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs) provide accurate and reliable data. Develops and maintains ATD processes and procedures, including training students. Responsibility 4: Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Essential Function 2: Develops model concepts and approaches as an individual researcher and acts independently on technical matters. Performs calibration and instrumentation of ADTS in compliance with SAE AS8049 and FAA Part 25.562 standards; and performs photometric data analysis and reporting using high-speed video data and FARO points. Responsibility 1: Develop or test models of alternate designs or processing methods to assess feasibility, sustainability, operating condition effects, potential new applications, or the necessity of modification. Essential Function 3: Collaborates with users and principal investigators on design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; provides technical leadership and technique consultation. Responsibility 1: Provide feedback to design engineers on customer problems or needs. Essential Function 4: Prepares analyses and reports, and assists with the preparation of materials for grant proposals to obtain funding in support of research activities. Responsibility 1: Conducts research that tests or analyzes the feasibility, design, operation, or performance of equipment, components, or systems. Operates and executes sled tests according to different crashworthiness standards and requirements for both the automotive and aerospace industries.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Engineering) or related STEM field. Two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory, including one (1) year of experience with the following: crash testing setups; calibration and instrumentation of ADTS in compliance with SAE AS8049 and FAA Part 25.562 standards; photometric data analysis and reporting using high-speed video data and FARO points. Demonstrated ability with CATIA V5 or equivalent 3D modeling software. Demonstrated ability to adhere to FAA, SAE, and ASTM technical requirements.
