Job Summary:
Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.
This position will support various diverse customer programs as an independent contractor consulting as a Senior Fatigue and Damage Tolerance (F&DT) Engineer with NIAR. These tasks may include preliminary sizing, development of load paths, detailed F&DT analysis, certification and documentation required to support program objectives. Experience in both metallic and composite analysis is desired. Some travel may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Perform Fatigue and Damage Tolerance Analysis and create documentation on various projects across the entire life cycle of design and development
- Utilize linear elastic fracture mechanics and software tools (NASGRO, AFGROW)
- Participate in mentoring of junior analysts as they develop their engineering skillsets
- Utilize civil and/or military F&DT regulations and requirements
- Work with minimal supervision while collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Domestic travel up to 10% may be required
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements:
- Ability to work on-site 80% of the time
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”
- Bachelors degree in Engineering
- Ten (10) years of related experience
- Proficiency in fatigue and damage tolerance analysis methodologies
- Experience with handbook analysis methods and Finite Element Modeling (Patran and Femap preferred)
- Experience with Crack Growth Software (NASGRO and AFGROW)
- Experience with metallic and composite analysis methods
- Familiarity with civil and/or military structural regulations and requirements
- Experience in 3D CAD tools (Catia v5 or 3DE preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to achieve desired results within a defined schedule
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint)
- Professional and diplomatic demeanor
- Strong sense of accountability and integrity
- Experience in technical leadership and mentoring of interns and junior engineers
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Experience with Spectrum development for analysis and testing
- Experience leading small teams and/or as technical specialist
- Aircraft support/MRB experience
- Experience with customer-facing role
- Experience with StressCheck
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
