Job Summary:
Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.
NIAR is looking for a talented Design Engineer to join our growing, innovative team. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Design Engineer with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs. This person will support design tasks across structural elements, systems installations, and engineering deliverables throughout the product lifecycle. They will execute changes to CAD models, drawings, and other documents in support of the product, participate in trade studies, create and maintain ICDs (interface control documents), and coordinate with customers. Some travel may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Designs and substantiates structure, mechanical systems, and interior components on various company projects and programs across the entire lifecycle of design and development.
- Design activity includes primary structure, flight test and development structure, instrumentation, flight controls, ECS, secondary structures, interiors, control surfaces, special mission equipment, prototype development, etc.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation such as design datasets, change requests, and engineering reports.
Requirements:
- Ability to work on-site 80% of the time
- This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”.
- Bachelor or above degree in engineering technical discipline with two (2) years’ experience
- Self-motivated and driven to produce high quality designs on schedule
- Experience in 3D CAD tools (3DExperience, CATIA V5, Siemens NX, Solidworks)
- Familiarity with NASA and/or FAA structural design standards
- Experience with airframe structure, systems, or interior design using appropriate CAD workbenches
- Experience developing and modifying 3D models & drawings or MBD datasets
- Familiar with GD&T, design fundamentals, and ASME standards Y14.5, Y14.31, Y14.37, and Y14.41
- Proficiency of GD&T tolerance application
- Experience with Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Domestic travel up to 10 % may be required
Desired Skills/Experience:
- Knowledge of applicable industry system specifications such as ARP 4754, AS 50881, DO-160
All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
