Job Story
The NIAR AMP lab at Wichita State University is seeking a motivated and reliable Student Assistant to support the Production Team in the Advanced Machining and Prototyping (AMP) Lab.
Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area in which the student assistant is employed, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.
Job Duties
This position is ideal for students interested in hands-on manufacturing, CNC operations, and machining processes. Under supervision, students will gain experience operating CNC machines and generating simple NC files using Mastercam. This role provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced machinists and programmers to develop technical skills relevant to the manufacturing and aerospace industries. Key Responsibilities: to create basic toolpaths and NC programs using Mastercam for standard machining operations
Operate CNC machines under the supervision of full-time production staff. Assist with part setup, tool loading, and machine monitoring during operation
Follow safety procedures and shop protocols at all times
Perform machine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and chip removal as needed
Organize and maintain tools, fixtures, and raw materials for active work orders
Support documentation of job travelers, tool lists, and machine runtime logs. Communicate clearly with production and engineering teams regarding work status
Other duties as assigned to support production efficiency and schedule adherence.
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Additional Requirements
Familiarity with manufacturing or machine shop environments. Interest in CNC machining or mechanical engineering. Basic understanding of technical drawings and CAD/CAM software.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at Wichita State University.
• Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment, including but not limited to phones, printers, copiers, and calculators.
Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
