Job Story
We are seeking a dedicated VA School Certifying Official (SCO) to join our team and serve as the primary liaison between our institution, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and our students. This role ensures accurate certification of enrollment, compliance with federal regulations, and exceptional support for those who have served our country.
Job Summary
Evaluates, verifies and/or certifies military and/or veteran education benefit documentation to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Provides military education information to students and staff regarding available programs and/or changes to policy and/or procedures. Serves as the University School Certifying Official.
Essential Functions
Evaluates military benefits documentation to determine student eligibility in accordance with applicable University and agency regulations, policies and standards. Updates and evaluates data within records systems to ensure alignment with compliance requirements. Provides information to current and prospective students on available program benefits, processes, changes, and coordinates with appropriate campus and community services and resources when needed. Serves as a resource to faculty and others with regard to military academic benefit, program changes, eligibility changes and applicable policies, procedures, and requirements. Coordinates with campus partners to ensure student needs are met, documentation is compliant and all requirements are met. Ensures funding is processed and distributed timely. Serves and maintains designation as School Certifying Official (SCO).
Required Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- One (1) year of experience working with military members and/or veterans or related field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Deep understanding of GI Bill® programs, including Post‑9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, and other VA education benefits.
- Familiarity with Title 38 U.S. Code, VA policies, and compliance requirements for certifying student enrollment.
- Knowledge of school academic policies, grading systems, attendance requirements, and reporting procedures.
- Understanding of FERPA, data privacy, and secure handling of student records.
- Ability to provide clear written and verbal communication with students, VA representatives, and school staff.
- Ability to resolve discrepancies in student records or benefit eligibility.
- Ability to prioritize multiple certifications and deadlines efficiently.
- Ability to provide accurate benefit information and guidance to veterans, service members, and dependents.
- Ability to work effectively with financial aid, registrar, and academic departments.
- Ability to adjust quickly to policy changes, new VA systems, or updated compliance requirements.
- Ability to translate complex VA rules into practical guidance for students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in related field
- Military experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
