Job Story

As the Insurance Risk Manager, you serve as the University’s frontline leader in risk readiness—anticipating risks before they become losses and working to ensure our university campus is adequately covered. You evaluate exposures, negotiate insurance policies, and guide departments through complex contracts and claims with confidence and clarity.


When covered incidents occur, you coordinate with carriers, legal teams, and campus departments to resolve claims efficiently and safeguard the institution’s interests. You build policies, processes, and safeguards that keep the University compliant, resilient, and prepared, while promoting a culture of safety through training and proactive risk reduction programs.

Job Summary

Manage the University’s insurance programs and mitigate risk exposure across all operations. Ensure adequate coverage for property, liability, and specialty risks, oversee claims administration, and develop policies to safeguard institutional assets while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions

• Identify and evaluate risks to university property, operations, and personnel; recommend strategies to minimize exposure and financial impact. Interprets and reviews contracts for indemnification and insurance terms and conditions.
• Administer all insurance policies, including property, liability, auto, and specialty coverage; negotiate terms, manage renewals, and ensure adequate coverage for institutional assets and activities.
• Oversee insurance claims from initial reporting through resolution; act as liaison between the university, insurance carriers, and legal counsel to ensure proper claims handling.
• Develop and maintain risk management policies and procedures; ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as university standards and contractual obligations.
• Implement programs to reduce risk and prevent losses, including property related safety initiatives and training. Promote awareness of insurance risk management practices across campus.
• Prepare reports on risk exposure, insurance coverages, and claims trends. Use data analytics to inform decision-making and improve insurance risk management strategies.
• Consults with and provides strategic guidance to University stakeholders regarding best practices, policy interpretation, problem resolution, and compliance with regulations, laws and policies.
• Must be available for on-call support during evenings and weekends, to respond to emergency situations involving insurance related matters.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Seven (7) years experience in insurance risk management, preferably in higher education or large organizations. Experience with property and casualty insurance programs and claims handling. Every 30 hours of college coursework in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, or related field may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex information.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; prioritize and manage multiple assignments; meet established deadlines; and exercise sound judgment and decision-making consistent with institutional policies.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheets and basic data analysis tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel) to track, analyze, and report claims activity, insurance premiums, and institutional risk exposures.
  • Working knowledge of commercial insurance coverages applicable to public universities, including property, professional liability, automobile liability, cyber liability, and aviation-related coverages.
  • Basic knowledge of claims management processes, loss control principles, and coordination with third-party administrators, insurers, and campus stakeholders.
  • Ability to review, interpret, and analyze insurance policies, endorsements, certificates of insurance, and loss data to assess coverage adequacy, compliance with contractual requirements, and alignment with institutional risk tolerance.
  • Skill in identifying risk exposures and coverage gaps, and in recommending appropriate risk mitigation strategies consistent with the University’s risk management objectives and stewardship of public funds.
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential, or legally protected information with discretion, professionalism, and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Experience working in higher education

 

Preferred License/Certifications/Training:

  • Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) credentials.
