Job Story

The  Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Professions at Wichita State University invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track Teaching Professor position. We seek an experienced physical therapist and educator who will contribute to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program through graduate teaching, student mentorship, scholarly activity, and service.

The successful candidate will contribute to instruction across the professional DPT curriculum. Areas of particular need include research methods, therapeutic exercise, physical agents/modalities, acute and subacute care, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, health informatics, professional practice, and other foundational and applied physical therapy content. Candidates are not expected to demonstrate expertise in all identified areas; however, the successful candidate should possess expertise that complements the teaching needs of the department and the ability to contribute across multiple areas of the DPT curriculum.

An important component of this position is supporting the program's student research activities. The faculty member will teach and/or contribute to research methods coursework, mentor student research groups, and supervise student scholarly capstone projects from development through completion and dissemination.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality instruction using classroom, laboratory, clinical, applied-learning, hybrid, and technology-supported teaching strategies as appropriate. The faculty member will collaborate with other faculty to support integration of content within and across the DPT curriculum and participate in curriculum development, assessment, and continuous improvement.

The faculty member will maintain scholarly activity consistent with departmental and college expectations and will participate in departmental, college, university, professional, and community service. Responsibilities will also include contributions to program assessment, accreditation activities, student recruitment and retention, and initiatives supporting student success.

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with an anticipated start date of May 24, 2027.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Job Duties

The successful candidate will teach and contribute to courses throughout the professional DPT curriculum based upon departmental needs and the faculty member's areas of expertise. Particular teaching needs include research methods, therapeutic exercise, physical agents/modalities, acute and subacute care, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, health informatics, professional practice, and general physical therapy content.
The faculty member will also play an active role in the DPT student research program, including teaching research methods, mentoring student research groups, and supervising scholarly capstone projects through development, implementation, analysis, presentation, and dissemination.
Additional responsibilities include student advising and mentorship, curricular development and assessment, scholarly activity, accreditation and program assessment activities, student recruitment and retention, and service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduate level degree or Equivalent Experience in the Field
  • Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

  • Clinical doctorate in Physical Therapy
  • Licensed PT in the state of KS
  • Member of the APTA.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice and professional physical therapist education.
  • Knowledge and expertise sufficient to contribute to multiple areas of the professional DPT curriculum.
  • Knowledge of research methods, evidence-based practice, and principles of scholarly inquiry.
  • Ability to teach research methods and guide graduate students through research and scholarly capstone projects.
  • Ability to contribute instructional expertise in one or more areas including research methods, therapeutic exercise, physical agents/modalities, acute care, subacute care, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, health informatics, professional practice, and general physical therapy content.
  • Ability to use effective instructional strategies appropriate for graduate professional education, including classroom, laboratory, applied-learning, hybrid, and technology-supported approaches.
  • Ability to accommodate a variety of learning needs and use multiple instructional strategies to promote student learning.
  • Ability to mentor and advise students in their academic, professional, and scholarly development.
  • Ability to conduct scholarly activity independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to contribute to curriculum development, curricular assessment, program assessment, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-based academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional graduate education, academic doctoral preparation, post-professional education, residency/fellowship training, or other advanced preparation relevant to the teaching and scholarly needs of the DPT program.
  • Experience teaching in a professional Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
  • Teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: research methods, therapeutic exercise, physical agents/modalities, acute care, subacute care, cardiopulmonary physical therapy, health informatics, professional practice, or other foundational or applied physical therapy content.
  • Experience supervising graduate student research or scholarly capstone projects.
  • Record of scholarly activity, including publications, presentations, or collaborative research.
  • Experience with curriculum development, curricular assessment, or program assessment.
  • Experience incorporating applied learning, simulation, or clinically relevant learning experiences into professional education.
  • Experience using learning management systems and technology-supported instruction.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software and research data management and analysis.
  • Evidence of effective collaboration in a team-based academic environment.

 

Preferred License/Certifications/Training:

  • Advanced clinical certification, specialty certification, residency/fellowship training, or other professional credentials relevant to the teaching needs of the DPT program.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to remain in a stationary position – Frequent 60-90%; Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators – Frequent 60-90%

Additional Physical Requirement:

Sedentary:  Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves remaining stationary most of the time.
