Job Story

The Counseling, Educational Leadership, Educational and School Psychology (CLES) Department in the College of Education at Wichita State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Counseling beginning August 2, 2027.

We seek a counselor educator who is committed to excellence in graduate teaching, clinical supervision, scholarship, student mentorship, and service. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth of the Counseling Program through high-quality instruction, supervision of counseling students, an active program of research, and engagement with professional and community partners.

The successful candidate will teach graduate courses in counseling in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. Teaching responsibilities may include counseling core courses, clinical skills courses, practicum, internship, supervision, research methods, statistics, program evaluation, assessment, dissertation preparation, or other courses aligned with the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. Candidates with expertise in research methodology, quantitative methods, qualitative methods, mixed methods, statistics, program evaluation, counselor education research, or related areas that support graduate and doctoral education are especially encouraged to apply.

This position also includes supervising graduate students in clinical training experiences, advising master’s and doctoral students, maintaining a productive scholarly agenda, contributing to accreditation and assessment activities, and providing service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.

The Counseling, Educational Leadership, Educational and School Psychology (CLES) Department prepares highly skilled, scholarly, and socially responsible professionals who serve individuals, families, schools, organizations, and communities through counseling, leadership, education, research, and service.

The department offers a range of graduate programs, including the Master of Education in Counseling, Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Education in Educational Psychology, Ph.D. in Education and Behavioral Studies with tracks in Educational Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counselor Education and Supervision, and Educational Specialist in School Psychology.

The Counseling Program includes CACREP-accredited master’s programs in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, as well as a doctoral track in Clinical Mental Health Counselor Education and Supervision. The program is also connected to the WISE Counseling Clinic, which provides supervised clinical training for graduate counseling students while offering accessible counseling services to the community.

Faculty in the CLES Department work in a collaborative academic environment that values strong teaching, applied learning, clinical training, research productivity, student mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and service to the profession and community.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Job Duties

Core Responsibilities may include:

Teaching
- Teach graduate courses in the Counseling Program in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
- Teach courses across the counseling curriculum, which may include counseling theories, counseling techniques, group counseling, career counseling, diagnosis, assessment, practicum, internship, supervision, research methods, statistics, program evaluation, dissertation preparation, or other courses based on program needs and faculty expertise.
- Contribute to doctoral-level instruction, including research-related coursework and dissertation preparation, as appropriate.
- Develop and deliver effective instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments.
- Support applied learning experiences that prepare students for professional counseling practice, supervision, leadership, and scholarship.
- Advise and mentor graduate students in academic, professional, clinical, and scholarly development.

Clinical Supervision and Professional Preparation
- Supervise graduate students in practicum and internship experiences, including placements in the WISE Counseling Clinic and community settings.
- Support students’ development of counseling skills, ethical decision-making, professional identity, and readiness for practice.
- Develop, foster, and maintain relationships with community agencies, schools, clinical sites, and other professional partners to support student placements, referrals, and applied learning opportunities.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and quality improvement of clinical training processes.

Research and Scholarly Activity
- Develop and maintain an active program of scholarly research consistent with expectations for tenure-track faculty.
- Publish peer-reviewed scholarship and present research at professional conferences.
- Pursue internal and external funding opportunities, as appropriate.
- Mentor graduate students in research, scholarly writing, conference presentations, and dissertation development.
- Contribute research expertise that strengthens the department’s master’s and doctoral programs.
- Support departmental research capacity in areas such as counseling outcomes, counselor education, supervision, research methodology, statistics, program evaluation, assessment, or related areas.

Service
- Provide service to the Counseling Program, CLES Department, College, University, profession, and community.
- Participate in program governance, curriculum development, recruitment, assessment, and accreditation-related activities.
- Contribute to CACREP accreditation maintenance and continuous program improvement.
- Engage with professional counseling organizations and related scholarly communities.
- Support the department’s mission through collaboration, collegiality, and professional leadership.

Required Education and Experience:

• Terminal degree in direct field
• Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

• Earned Doctorate or ABD from a CACREP-accredited university in counseling, and/or counselor education (all requirements for the doctorate must be completed prior to August 2, 2027).
• Professional identity as a Counselor Educator as evidenced by affiliations with either/or the American Counseling Association (ACA), American School Counseling Association (ASCA), American Mental Health. Counselor Association (AMHCA), or the Association for Counselor Education & Supervision (ACES).
• LPC Licensure-eligible in the State of Kansas.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience as a licensed professional counselor or clinical mental health counselor.
• Evidence of successful teaching experience in a CACREP-accredited program and experience in supervising counseling practicum and internship students.
• Expertise in one or more research areas such as quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods.
• Experience teaching research methods, statistics, program evaluation, assessment, dissertation preparation, or related graduate-level research courses.
