Job Story

The School of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education at Wichita State University invites applications for a 12-month full-time assistant clinical professor of education and director of the Transition to Teaching program. We seek an expert in areas related to, but not limited to, alternative teacher education, preparing individuals who are changing careers to become teachers, and middle and high school teacher education. We are looking for a collaborative colleague to lead our alternative certification program in the School of Teaching and Learning and join an engaged and collaborative faculty at Kansas’s only urban public research university. The academic appointment for this position will be effective June 7, 2027.

As a faculty member in the School of Teaching and Learning, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level classes in the fall, spring, and summer as part of our alternative teacher preparation program. The new faculty member will also work with various populations of students, colleagues, and community, engage in grant seeking activities, and provide service to the program, department, college, university, and profession.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Job Duties

This position will lead the Transition to Teaching program in the School of Teaching and Learning. Faculty members share responsibility for programmatic and instructional decisions within and across program options. The position is a 12-month appointment and carries a 4:4 load for fall/spring semesters, with an additional 6 credit hours of teaching in the summer semester. The director receives a 1-credit release each semester as part of administrative duties for leading the program.

The Assistant Educator/Assistant Clinical Professor position include 80% teaching of undergraduate and graduate level courses as assigned, with a focus on content specific pedagogy, research, capstone, and internship or field experience courses. This also includes mentoring and supervising T2T teachers in both years of the program and coordinating school placements.

The faculty member will provide service to departmental, college, university, professional and community constituting 20% of this role. Primarily the service role will include the Director of the Transition to Teaching program: developing and maintaining relationships with local school districts and agencies; attend relevant meetings, maintaining student data, leading the program annual report, contributing to accreditation and university reports, and directing recruitment and retention for T2T program. The faculty member may collaborate with colleagues to seek grants related to alternative certification programs.

This position requires regular on-campus presence at Wichita State University. The selected candidate must reside in Kansas within a reasonable commuting distance of the WSU main campus.

Required Education and Experience:

• Graduate level degree or Equivalent Experience in the Field
• Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

• A Masters or Ed.D or Ph.D. in Education, in teacher preparation or related field, completed prior to start date.
• Experience in K-12 teaching

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching.
• Willingness to employ various strategies in instructional delivery and learning activities, flexible teaching methods, and applied learning approaches.
• Evidence of communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse students and colleagues.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty and professionals.
• Ability to work supportively with returning adult college students/career professionals.
• Ability to develop relationships with community partners to enhance supervision and coordination of school placements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Earned Ed.D or Ph.D. in Teacher Preparation-Secondary Education or related field.
• Three years’ professional-level 6-12 teaching experience.
• Previous university level teaching experience, including online teaching
• Evidence of working with adult college students.
• Experience mentoring pre-service or in-service teachers.
• Experience in university level course development and implementation.
• Evidence of leadership in education.
