Job Story

The Master of Arts in Arts Leadership and Management program prepares emerging and established arts leaders for careers in nonprofit, commercial, and community-based arts organizations. The program emphasizes leadership, entrepreneurship, strategic planning, fundraising, audience development, advocacy, and organizational management.

The School of Music and the College of Fine Arts at invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure track Assistant Educator/Assistant Teaching Professor of the Master of Arts in Arts Leadership and Management (MAALM) and Music Industry Studies beginning August 2027.

This joint appointment supports Wichita State University's commitment to applied learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and engagement with the evolving arts and entertainment industries. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate education through teaching, scholarship, industry engagement, and service that bridges arts leadership, entrepreneurship, music industry studies, and related creative-sector fields. Music Industry Studies prepares students for careers across the contemporary music ecosystem, including artist development, music business, live events, publishing, management, marketing, and digital media. The program emphasizes experiential learning and engagement with industry professionals and organizations.

The faculty member will be expected to teach courses across Music Industry Studies and MAALM; develop innovative curriculum responsive to changes in the creative economy; maintain an active scholarly, creative, or professional agenda; mentor students; and contribute to program development, recruitment, and partnerships with arts, cultural, and entertainment organizations. This joint appointment provides opportunities to collaborate across academic units and with community and industry partners throughout Wichita and the region.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Job Duties

Teaching:
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Music Industry Studies, Arts Leadership and Management, and related areas.
Develop and revise curriculum that reflects contemporary practices in arts administration, entrepreneurship, music business, and the creative industries.
Deliver high-quality instruction in face-to-face, online, and hybrid environments as appropriate.
Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, including internships, capstone projects, independent studies, and applied learning experiences.
Foster partnerships that connect students with arts organizations, music industry professionals, and community stakeholders.

Service:
Participate in service activities within the MAALM program, School of Music, College of Fine Arts, and Wichita State University.
Contribute to curriculum development, program assessment, accreditation activities, student recruitment, and strategic planning.
Engage with professional organizations and community partners in ways that enhance program visibility and student opportunities.
Support university initiatives related to applied learning, innovation, and community engagement.

Other Duties:
Administration of program: devise recruitment strategies to grow enrollment in MAALM.
Perform other responsibilities consistent with faculty expertise and departmental needs. All faculty members are expected to uphold professional and ethical standards in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Graduate level degree or Equivalent Experience in the Field
  • Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

  • Master’s degree or other appropriate degree in Arts Administration, Arts Leadership, Music Industry, Music Business, Music, Entrepreneurship, Higher Education, Business, or a closely related field.

    Required Qualifications:
  • Teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; evidence may include prior teaching experience, student evaluations, teaching awards, or a teaching philosophy that reflects best practices in instruction.
  • Demonstrated professional achievement relevant to arts leadership, arts management, music industry studies, music business, entrepreneurship, or related fields.
  • Evidence of professional engagement in arts, entertainment, music, nonprofit, cultural, or creative-sector organizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to contribute to both Music Industry Studies and MAALM curricular and programmatic needs.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, industry professionals, and community partners.
  • Commitment to applied learning and student success.
  • Demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Knowledge and understanding of program design, development, implementation, and evaluation, including leadership strategies and best practices.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development.
  • Ability to provide instruction curriculum to a variety of learners.
  • Commitment to collaborative processes and environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional leadership experience within arts, cultural, entertainment, or music-sector organizations.
  • Experience teaching arts administration, entrepreneurship, music business, fundraising, marketing, event management, strategic planning, nonprofit management, artist management, or related subjects.
  • Record of scholarship, creative activity, professional accomplishment, or industry engagement.
  • Experience developing partnerships with arts organizations, music businesses, community agencies, or creative-sector enterprises.
  • Experience with online and hybrid instruction.
  • Experience mentoring graduate students and supervising internships or capstone projects.
  • Experience developing partnerships with arts organizations, music businesses, community agencies, or creative-sector enterprises.
