Job Story
The Access Services team of Ablah Library directly engages the campus community. We help students, faculty, and staff access equipment, learning materials, and entertainment.
Job Summary
A Graduate Staff Assistant (GSA) assistants university service and academic units in either non-teaching or non-research activities. Specific duties of the GSA vary widely, depending on the administrative or academic unit to which they are assigned, but should be at a level to make use of their education and abilities.
Job Duties
Responsible for service to library users at the Circulation and Reserve Desks. Those services include:
· Circulation of library books and other materials such as DVDs, textbooks, and equipment
· Answer basic questions about the library, its policies and services
· Answer basic questions about the campus
· Assist library patrons with location of materials
· Assist patrons with computers and scanners
· Assist patrons with microform readers and calculate fees for microform services
· Search for lost/missing library materials
· Assist in the processing of reserve materials (i.e., collecting books, word processing, adding and updating information on the computer)
· Interpret policies and procedures for student assistants
· Register new community user patrons and make Shocker Cards for them
· Explain the information listed in the online catalog for patrons as needed
· Gather statistics for projects as requested by the staff
· Coordinate and finalize opening and/or closing procedures
· Help shelve books, DVDs, and other materials when necessary
· Work with staff to ensure the smooth functioning of Circulation and Reserve Department activities
· Other duties as assigned
Required Education
Bachelor's degree
Additional Requirements
· Enrolled in WSU Graduate School
· Good communication skills
· Graduate Assistants share the evening and weekend shifts. Applicant must be available at least two closing shifts during the week and one weekend day
· Able to follow written and oral instructions
· Typing proficiency
· Basic cash handling skills
· Basic computer skills
Required Experience
To be eligible for an assistantship, students must be admitted to a degree program in either full or conditional standing. Students admitted on probation or placed on academic probation following admission may be eligible for assistantship awards under certain circumstances.
Preferred Qualifications
· Customer service experience
· Library experience (especially with Library of Congress classification systems)
· Leadership experience
Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
