Summary of Responsibilities

This is a paraprofessional who provides chair side dental assisting to dentists in the care and treatment of patients in a teaching setting, and supports the operations of the patient-serving clinic.

Minimum Education
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduate of Accredited Dental Assistant Program OR at least two years of chair-side experience.
Minimum Experience
  • Two years or more experience in dental support. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Able to interface with public, residents, faculty, administration, patients and their family members in a professional manner verbally, in writing, by computer, and/or by telephone
  • Manual dexterity skills for instrument passing
  • Knowledge of all dental instruments and procedures
  • Computer competency; knowledge of dental software
  • Proficiency in ordered radiology exams and performance of tests
  • Proficiency in chart documentation r/t charge capture processes
  • Knowledge of HIPPA compliance
  • Knowledge of Infection Control/ Blood Borne
    pathogens
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity
  • Able to multi-task under pressure
Required Licenses, Certificates & Registrations
  • Certified Dental Assistant. Education and/or experience may be substituted for certification as determined relevant by the agency
  • Current BLS (CPR)
  • Conscious Sedation Monitoring Certification. Experience may be substituted for certification as determined relevant by the agency.

Preferred Education
  • Eligible for National Dental Assistant Certification through DANB if not already completed

Regular Hours of Work Mon-Friday 8:00-5:00 (Flex schedule)
Environmental Factors

Environment is consistent with a health care facility, office, and teaching area. Exposure to various pathogens, secretions, blood borne pathogens, air droplet and chemicals used in the environment is possible. Human behaviors.

Proposed Job Duties

Responsibility / Duty

-Prepares operatories before opening, ensuring that areas are well kept and clean; assesses supplies and restocks, reorders and correctly labels items; promptly reports service issues to Clinic Manager or Program Manager.
- Performs appropriate instrument maintenance, sterilization, set up and passing of instruments.
- Turns over operatory and preps for next patient.
-Prepares inventory request report on a monthly to bi-monthly basis for Program Manager.

-1st chair assist as defined need by Director/Faculty; observes appropriate PPE for patient interaction; works in accordance with policy procedure manual and MSDS book for AEGD.
-Performs X-rays and reviews of PMHx; Makes future appointments at chair side; supports patient education; participates in patient satisfaction surveys; performs follow up calls on past patients in a professional, patient-centric manner.
-Documents accurately to ensure excellent charge capture; uses computer information management system for various aspects of care, charting, radiology, reports, charge captures, and schedules.
-Performs chart audits to ensure accuracy of charge capture and other processes.

Explain Physical Job Requirements

Must be able to climb stairs; work wearing PPE; and work in environments where blood borne pathogens exist. Must have visual acuity to see in operative field as well as see computer screens; manual dexterity in instrument manipulation; ability to physically move about office and clinic on two floors with efficiency of speed in emergency situations and throughout the day. Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.’ as needed.
