Summary of Responsibilities

Produce feature-length news reports, newscast spots and other news programming as assigned for broadcast and social media for KMUW and the Kansas News Service. Provide specific education-beat coverage for Wichita and Kansas through the collaborative statewide public radio initiative funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Participate in news planning meetings, generation of story ideas and evaluation of broadcast and online content. Collaborate with the Engagement team on news initiatives and community ascertainment. Assist station staff with community outreach events and other initiatives.

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree
Minimum Experience
  • Successful experience producing spot news, complex audio news features and content for online distribution.
  • Successful experience using broadcast, production and field recording equipment.
  • Successful experience using current audio editing software, such as Adobe Audition.
  • Excellent computer skills including AP Newsdesk (or similar software) and content management systems.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills, with an intelligible speaking voice.
  • Excellent and creative interviewing and copy writing skills appropriate for public radio broadcast news reports.
  • Excellent and creative news copy writing skills appropriate for generating digital content for online distribution and social media.
  • Ability to incorporate editing changes and collaborate with supervisor and statewide news collaborative to continually improve the quality of broadcast and online content.
  • Ability to appropriately use social media for delivery and awareness of news.
  • Working knowledge of digital photography and photojournalism.
  • Understanding of and commitment to digital platforms for content delivery.
  • Must be able to successfully meet production, broadcast and online posting deadlines, while having the capacity to flex with the ever-changing news cycle and the ability to report breaking and fast turnaround stories.
  • Must actively participate in generation of story ideas and evaluation of broadcast and online content.
  • Must be capable of meeting daily and weekly deadlines and to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Awareness, understanding and ability to implement the core values of public radio.

  • Valid Driver’s License for travel.

Regular Hours of Work M-F 8-5 with the exception of when a news story needs to be covered or interview conducted before or after typical hours, which could happen often. Evening and weekend work may be required for specific projects and station activities.
Environmental Factors

Travel away from the station is required to cover assigned news stories. A portion of the job is spent in an office environment and broadcast studio with standard lighting and temperature settings. Assignments will require extensive recording in the field where extended walking, climbing, standing and crouching may be necessary. Field recording may be in agricultural and industrial settings and places of high traffic, etc. There will be extensive use of a computer keyboard, mouse and audio board. Headphones are used in the field and in broadcast studios.

Explain Physical Job Requirements

Employee will need to be able to manipulate a computer, an audio board, speak clearly, listen to audio files, read copy and sit or stand for the amount of time it takes to produce content. Employee must be able to travel from KMUW studios to locations in and around Wichita. The employee will be reimbursed for travel and other applicable expenses according to the appropriate policies of the state of Kansas and Wichita State University.
