Job Story
NIAR ATLAS is looking for a student to work in our Non-Destructive Testing lab to perform ultrasonics with a variety of techniques as well as laser shearography and infrared thermography. The technician will be responsible for conducting tests on a variety of materials and structures with a primary emphasis being composite structures.
Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.
Job Duties
o Perform non-destructive testing on materials, components, and structures according to specific codes and procedures or the instructions given by the lab manager.
o Evaluate test results to the lab manager
o Operate and maintain testing equipment and tools including scanners, ultrasonic equipment, X-ray equipment, shearography equipment, and thermography equipment.
o Be capable of designing or learning how to design your own stands and or jigs that you may need to perform a specific test.
o Maintaining a safe work environment.
o Give presentations during the lab manager’s absence when necessary.
o Provide technical support to engineers and anyone else who may need help understanding results.
o Collaborate with other NDT labs as well as technicians to help with the interpretation of results.
o Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds when needed to carry large structures or to do what is necessary in your daily job activities.
o The work is primarily performed in a laboratory setting but occasionally field work will be required with possible travel.
o Technicians may be required to work in confined spaces and at heights.
o Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, and radiation.
Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Additional Requirements
o Currently enrolled in an NDT program at WSU Tech or Cowley County Community College or previously finished with the program looking for an OJT opportunity is required.
o Classroom UT1, UT2 classes, and X-ray with radiation safety already completed is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
o Individuals need to have excellent attention to detail day in and day out.
o Needs to be capable of solving problems on their own when the time comes.
o Be able to work independently but also in a team environment as well.
o Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
o Be able to work under pressure with customers watching everything you do from time to time.
o Strong public speaking skills.
o Be proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint or be able to learn.
o Being comfortable using hand tools and power tools or learning them.

Physical Requirements
Ability to remain in a stationary position.
