Job Story
NIAR ATLAS is offering an exciting opportunity for students who are looking to gain hands-on experience in Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI). Students will learn the fundamentals of Ultrasonic Testing (UT), X-ray Computed Tomography (CT), Infrared Thermography (IRT), and Shearography in a professional setting. While prior experience in NDI is not required, students with some coursework or hands-on exposure to NDI concepts will have an advantage.

Job Summary
A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties
Hands-on Training & Inspection Assistance:
• Assist in performing Ultrasonic Testing (UT), X-ray CT, Infrared Thermography (IRT), and Shearography inspections under supervision.
• Learn to operate UT, X-ray CT, Thermography, and Shearography equipment and understand their principles.
• Help set up and calibrate NDI instruments for different testing applications.
• Conduct basic NDI scans and inspections on various materials and components.
• Support the collection and interpretation of NDI data and imaging results.
• Ability to lift and handle parts weighing up to 50 lbs as needed for inspection setups.

Data Collection, Analysis & Reporting:
• Assist in processing and analyzing UT waveforms, X-ray CT images, infrared thermal patterns, and shearography fringe patterns.
• Observe and document defects, material inconsistencies, and structural anomalies.
• Learn to interpret NDI results under guidance and gain exposure to industry standards and evaluation criteria.
• Help prepare inspection reports and documentation for review.

Equipment Handling & Maintenance:
• Assist in maintaining NDI equipment and ensuring proper functionality.
• Follow calibration procedures and help conduct basic equipment performance checks.
• Adhere to safety protocols and best practices when working with inspection systems.

Required Education
High school diploma or equivalent

Requirements
Current student in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
Strong interest in Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI), imaging technologies, materials analysis, or quality control.
Detail-oriented with a curious and analytical mindset.
Willingness to learn technical skills and follow instructions carefully.
Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to follow safety protocols and work responsibly in a technical setting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel for data reporting, presentations, and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications
Completion of or enrollment in NDI-related coursework (e.g., Ultrasonic Testing, Radiographic Testing, Thermography, or Shearography).
Previous hands-on experience with any NDI methods through coursework, labs, or internships.
Experience with data analysis, imaging software, or digital scanning technologies.
Basic knowledge of CAD, MATLAB, Python, or similar tools.
Ability to read and interpret technical documents, blueprints, or inspection procedures.
